Shhh – It's a secret!

4 September 2010

This weekend, Helen visited the Middle East by way of Alexandra Palace at the spectacular Secret Cinema screening of Lawrence of Arabia.

Secret Cinema is growing in popularity, and little wonder. The premise is exciting to any cinephile – a total immersion experience surrounding a classic film… the twist being the film is kept a secret till the credits roll.

Clues beforehand led us to suspect Lawrence of Arabia, Dune or Indiana Jones, as we were pre-advised the dress code was Bedouin, and told to bring rugs and cushions. As we arrived, warlike Arab tribal leaders on horseback and even camels greeted us, and inside the suitably Egyptian themed Alexandra Palace was transformed into a WW1 style officers mess and then a windy, incense filled street bazaar with incredible attention to detail.

Having bought our turkish delight and kofte supper, hung out in the desert, draped a snake over our shoulders and watched the belly dancers, we laid out our rugs like a tribal gathering and settled down to the main event. Which was, of course, classic.
